Dukan Recipes to Spice Up Your High Protein Diet

Dukan recipe tip #1 - vinegar

Vinegar is allowed during all phases of the diet. This condiment performs essential work in creating sauces to flavor protein rich food. Dips can be created using simply vinegar, low fat yogurt and some mustard. During the protein and vegetable phases of the Dukan diet, vinegar can be used to create tasty salad dressings.

Dukan recipe tip #2 - mustard

A small spread of mustard is permitted whilst on the diet and, as anyone who has ever tasted mustard knows, adds real flavor to meats. I have found while shopping around for my diet that French mustard is the best mustard in terms of nutritional content. It is delicious too.

Dukan recipe tip #3 - herbs and spices

All herbs and spices are permitted during the diet. Some freshly chopped mint leaves can be added to yogurt to make a simple sauce. Coriander and black onion seeds add a touch of Indian mystery to Dukan recipes. If you like things spicy, then why not sprinkle some dried chillies over your food?

The key to adding flavor to your recipes is to look for high flavor, low fat, condiments and then to use them liberally. Be open to new tastes and eating sensations and you will soon be cooking flavorsome food. Look at the wide varieties of herbs and spices available in your local market. If there are some you haven't use before to flavor your meals, then try them, you could be about to discover a new favorite flavor. Don't forget sweet flavours such as vanilla pods and cinnamon. Spicy food doesn't have to be hot remember you can cool down the heat by adding yogurt as long as it is low fat. The important thing is to experiment and have fun so that you enjoy your time on the diet.

High Protein Diet for Weight Loss: Very Effective

There are many studies that have been conducted on the benefits of a high protein diet for weight loss. These studies agree with the fact that a high protein diet can help one lose weight. For a while now most of the emphasis has been on low carbohydrates diet as the best way to lose weight. Of course carbohydrates and fats are the most responsible for weight gain in any diet and a reduction of the same should lead to a reduction of weight. Of course you still need to eat to stay healthy and proteins are a very good alternative.

Studies have shown that when the fat and carbohydrates are reduced in a diet and proteins increased, a person will feel more satisfied, less frequently hungry and they will also lose weight. Switching to a high protein diet leads to less calorie intake while you remain satisfied. High protein diet has also been shown to enhance the burning of fat deposits while improving blood lipid levels. People on high protein diets have better control of their appetites and are thus able to avoid excessive calorie intake that can come as a result of binge eating or eating too frequently.

\"protein Diet\"

A high protein diet helps reduce body fat and maintain lean tissue because the fats will be burned to produce body fuel without the person on diet feeling constant hunger. It is also postulated that the high protein diet results in the production of lower levels of appetite-stimulating hormones thus reducing the appetite of dieters. There is a wide range of recommended protein intake in any diet. Anywhere between 10%-35% of total calorie intake is considered good. This translates to higher protein levels than the recommended dietary allowance of proteins in the diet of a normal, healthy adult.

High Protein Diet for Weight Loss: Very Effective

A high protein diet for weight loss has been shown to improve glucose and insulin homeostasis. The amino acids from protein metabolism interact with glucose metabolism as carbon substrates. Proteins therefore stabilize blood glucose during non absorptive periods. Having a steady blood glucose level will reduce the urge to eat all the time. The best way to go about it is to eat four or five meals and snacks per day. This will ensure that you don't get hungry in between and disrupt your program by eating what was not part of your plan.

There is a lot of debate on whether a high protein diet for weight loss is the best option to take. One thing for sure, it is highly beneficial and those who have tried it have witnessed satisfactory results. As with any other weight loss diet plan, you also need to engage in regular exercise if you want to get the best outcome from your weight loss efforts. Make a point of exercising regularly to help burn excess calories. A high protein diet does not also mean that you neglect other food groups. Your body needs a well balanced diet with all types of nutrients if you are to remain healthy.

What Are The Differences Between High Protein Diet For Women and Men?

A high protein diet can be an effective way to lose weight and build muscle in both women and men, and there are many similarities in the diet for intended for each sex. There are some differences as well though, because men and women do have some different daily nutritional needs. One of the similarities is that whether you are male or female your diet will include foods which are rich in protein and nutrients, will being low in fat and carbohydrates at the same time. All sugars should be minimized or avoided completely, and both men and women should give up sodas and junk food because of the empty calories as well as the sugar. Candy is banned completely regardless of whether the diet is intended for men or women, and fruits are restricted to those which are low in carbohydrates.

High protein diets are low in fat no matter who they are intended for, men or women. These diets are based around meats, certain types of fish, beans and legumes, nuts, egg whites, and other excellent sources of protein. Both men and women may find that these diets do not offer a very large variety of choices. Lean meats such as sirloin, turkey, and chicken are encouraged, and so are numerous vegetables which are nutritious but low in carbohydrates. Both men and women are expected to include exercise together with a diet that is rich in protein, and neither should follow these diets for long time periods according to medical professionals. For short-term results a diet high in protein and fiber but low in fat and carbohydrates will benefit both sexes in most cases.

\"protein Diet\"

The biggest differences between a high protein diet for women and one intended for men is the calorie amount allowed and the amount of protein required for every pound of body weight. Men should have between seventeen hundred and two thousand calories per day, while women should ideally only have twelve hundred to sixteen hundred calories per day. These are just guidelines though, and in some cases either sex may require additional calories if large amounts of energy are expended daily. The protein requirements will also be different for men and women. Almost all of these diets require that women consume approximately one point two grams of protein each day for every pound of body weight. The requirement for men is higher, at one and a half grams of protein each day per pound of body weight.

What Are The Differences Between High Protein Diet For Women and Men?

High protein diets between men and women are very similar, with only a few small differences setting them apart. That is because these diets are based on the same high protein low carbohydrate foods and the inclusion of regular exercise. The few differences are only based on the grams of protein you need for every pound that you weigh, and the number of calories that you can have on a daily basis. Even these are not set in stone, and can be adjusted according to your needs. Both diets allow you to choose foods you enjoy from the list, instead of dictating each menu choice for you.

High Protein Diet Plans - Rapid Fat Loss Diet

Protein is raw building material for the human body. Every year your body creates around 98% of new cells and these new cells come from the food we eat, specifically protein rich foods. Protein is the actual raw construction material for body cells like bricks are for building. Body structures made from protein include skin, hair, nails, bones, connective tissue and, muscle.

In a high protein diet your meals will primarily be complete proteins and then carbohydrates and fats. Briefly, complete proteins are found in foods that contain a balanced combination of all the essential and nonessential amino acids in the exact amounts required by the body for growth.

\"protein Diet\"

Protein can be found in vegetables, beans, legumes, and grains however, the protein in these foods is not considered "complete" because it lacks one or more of the essential amino acids. The complete proteins are those that come from animal sources such as eggs, milk and meat.

High Protein Diet Plans - Rapid Fat Loss Diet

List of complete proteins used in high protein diet plans

  • Chicken breast
  • Turkey breast
  • Fish
  • Shellfish
  • Eggs (Mostly whites-use limited yolks)
  • Lean red meats (Top round, lean sirloin, flank)
  • Nonfat or low fat dairy products
  • Milk, egg, or whey-based protein powders.

For long term high protein diet plans are not ideal for sustaining a healthy lifestyle. The baseline diet of 50-55% carbohydrates, 30% protein and 15-20% fat is without a doubt the healthiest, most balanced way to eat, and most people will lose fat on these ratios just by making sure their calories come from good foods. As a short-term fat loss program there's no question that eating more protein and less carbohydrates makes it easier for some people to lose body fat.

High protein diets consist of fairly low carbohydrates intake and so calories are also low. The result will be some muscle loss so to offset the drop in carbohydrates and keep your calories above "starvation level," your protein intake must be increased.

While fending off muscle loss a high protein diet will also speed up the fat burning process. Protein foods speed up your metabolism because your body has to work harder to digest, process and utilize this nutrient compared to fat or carbohydrate. This protein effect is one of the reasons that a higher protein diet is more effective for fat loss than a high fat diet or a high carbohydrate diet. Too much of any food type can be stored as body fat, but protein is less likely to be converted to fat than any other nutrient.

When using high protein diet plans you need to drink more water than usual. Metabolizing protein requires more water than fats or carbohydrates, so it's extremely important to consume extra water if you increase your protein. The standard recommendation for water re-hydration is 8 glasses a day so use that as a guide and make sure you drink more than that.

High Protein Diet Plans - Rapid Fat Loss Diet

So, generally, as long as you don't overdo the protein intake a high-protein, low or moderate carbohydrate diet is a good start as a temporary fat loss program. Nutrition programs should be cycled just like training programs. So after a week or two on the high protein diet you would switch to a much more balanced diet that contains a wide variety of foods, with less protein, more carbs and plenty of fruits, vegetables, complex carbohydrates and whole grains.

How to Make the Lemon Detox Diet Drink - The Correct Recipe and Ingredients

Getting this very simple recipe right is crucial to your ultimate result.

Ingredients for the Lemon Detox Drink

Diet

  • 2 Tablespoons Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice
  • 2 Tablespoons Maple Syrup Grade B
  • 1/10th Teaspoon Cayenne Pepper
  • 8 fl Oz's Pure Water

How to Make the Lemon Detox Diet Drink - The Correct Recipe and Ingredients

Mix all of the ingredients together in a glass and enjoy! Initially you may find the cayenne pepper a little hot, especially if you are not used to spicy food but this is something that you also become accustomed to very quickly.

I was quite surprised at how hot it was when I first tried it but I was soon adding extra cayenne for an even stronger detox towards the end.

You'll need to drink a minimum of 6 detox drinks throughout the day. Somewhere between 8 - 12 is ideal. Make sure that you are also drinking plenty of fresh pure water throughout the day too.

Whenever you start to feel a bit hungry, go and mix yourself a drink. This tends to keep hunger pains at bay pretty quickly. Once you get past day 3, you'll probably find that you will experience very few actual hunger pains although about 1 in 4 people do say that they have regular hunger pains throughout. But don't worry, I've got a good feeling that you'll be one of the lucky other 3!

The drink is best made fresh each time that you want to drink it but this sometimes isn't possible, especially if you are heading off to work. To try and maintain the cleaning power of the lemon enzymes, make a concentrate of the maple syrup and the lemon juice and just add water when you want to drink it.

**TIP**

So if you were planning on drinking 3 drinks whilst you were out, you would need to make up a concentrate of 6 tablespoons of lemon juice and 6 tablespoons of maple syrup.

To make life easier on yourself, take 3 separate bottles of water each containing 8 fl Oz's of pure water but with the capacity for 10 fl Oz's as you will be adding your concentrate to it.

You'll need to pack a tablespoon for measuring and your cayenne to add at the end. (you can add 3/10ths of a teaspoon of cayenne to the concentrate but cayenne tends to get hotter when it hits liquid and is left for a period of time).

Once you're ready for a drink, just get your concentrate out and give it a good shake, then measure 4 tablespoons into the bottle, add your cayenne, shake and drink!

**Tip**

If hunger creeps in just distract yourself. I decided to detox my house whilst I detoxed my body. There is nothing quite like cleaning to keep you focused and distracted. My house had never looked so good by the time I had finished my detox and of course it helps when you get so much more energy than you normally have.

If you don't have a house to clean try some light exercise as this will make you feel great and keep your mind off food. Don't forget to keep drinking the detox drink and replenishing your water supplies.

Apple Diet - It Works For Weight Loss, But Beware of 1 Version Of This Diet

Ever hear of the apple diet? It's a popular weight loss diet that has numerous versions and spin-offs. A lot of these versions are healthy and work for weight loss, however 1 version you must absolutely avoid.

First, why the apple diet works...

Diet

A big reason on why the apple diet works has to do with the high water content and high amount of fiber in each apple. The high water content allows you to "eat water" basically. The foods you mostly "eat water" with are generally low in calories, but very filling. For example, a 300-calorie candy bar won't fill you up, but 300-calories worth of apples will.

Apple Diet - It Works For Weight Loss, But Beware of 1 Version Of This Diet

Another reason why the apple diet works is because each apple has 5 grams of fiber in it. It has both soluble and insoluble fiber. Having a high fiber intake is a big part of successful long term weight loss programs.

The average American only gets about 12 grams of fiber each day. It's recommended that you get 25 grams of fiber each day. I, however, advocate getting 35-50 grams of fiber each day for easy long term weight loss.

There are 2 rules to the apple diet...

Rule #1: Eat 1 apple before each meal

This is the main rule. Very simple, huh?

Just eat 1 apple before each of 3 meals. Nothing more. I won't even tell you to stop eating your favorite foods. Obviously, if you eat a little bit more healthy, you'll increase the speed in which you lose weight... but I won't force you to eat healthier.

Rule #2: Don't forget rule #1

Seriously, there is just 1 rule to the apple diet. However I want to add that I've found that my clients who have tried the apple diet get better results simply by following rule #1 and eating healthy snacks.

That's all you need to change in your diet... eat an apple before each of 3 meals... and eat healthy snacks. You can continue to eat more unhealthy type of foods for your meals. Just don't eat unhealthy snacks!

So, if you want an easy weight loss plan that isn't complicated and doesn't require much thinking on your part, try the apple diet.

3 Day Cardiac Diet Review

The 3 Day Cardiac Diet supposedly comes from the Birmingham Hospital in Alabama, hence it is also known as the Birmingham Hospital Diet. According to reports, this diet plan was designed for the use of patients who needed to lose up to 10 lbs weight quickly so they could undergo surgery.

The true origins of this diet are not clear and the Birmingham Hospital does not claim responsibility for it. Moreover, the diet now appears to have become the stuff of internet legend as there are versions of it widely known under a variety of names, including the Tuna Fish Diet, Baptist Hospital 3 day Diet, 3 day Navy Diet, 3 day Army Diet, Birmingham Cardiac Diet, Florida 3 Day Diet, American Heart Association Diet, Alabama 3 Day Diet, Hospital 3 Day Diet, and more.

Diet

However, there is a strong correspondence between the menu plans of these different versions so, for all intents and purposes, they can be treated as the same diet and comments applicable to one are substantially applicable to them all.

3 Day Cardiac Diet Review

In summary, the 3 Day Cardiac Diet comprises menu plans for breakfast, lunch and dinner covering a period of three days. The daily calorie intake is about 1,000 calories, so much of the weight loss benefit is likely obtained by the restricted calorie intake, although some claim is made that the benefit is due to chemical reaction. Eating a low level of carbohydrates will also mean that water is lost from the body.

For the plan to produce results, it's important to keep hydration levels up by drinking plenty of water: 6-8 cups is recommended. This also aids digestion.

An important source of protein for the 3 day Cardiac diet is tuna. 1/2 cup of tuna is consumed on the first two days, increasing to 1 cup on the third day. Variety and nutrition is provided with small portions of vegetables, grapefruit, banana, cheese, eggs, crackers and toast. Coffee or tea is permitted with meals. (For a detailed menu, do a quick search for my article, "3 Day Tuna Fish Diet- Menu and Diet Plan".)

Some concerns about this diet stem from the restricted levels of calories and nutrition. As the calories provided in this diet are so low, it's is likely that followers will feel hunger pangs and lower energy levels, especially by the third day. Vitamins and minerals are also low so that probably a multi vitamin supplement should be recommended as an additional source.

With only three small meals a day, your body may start to recognize that only a limited food supply is available and begin to compensate by reducing metabolism and energy levels to conserve fat reserves. This actually makes it harder to lose weight and, along with the feelings of hunger, places the body under additional stress.

The 3 Day Cardiac diet does not claim to be suitable for long term use and after 3 days you should follow a program that offers more variety in the content to provide the proteins, fats, carbohydrates and other nutrients that your body needs. More variety would also make it easier to follow this plan, as well as more enjoyable.

It is possible to follow a quick weight reduction plan that offers a more balanced and healthier range of foods. In particular, one which includes a technique known as calorie shifting and takes into account your own food preferences would be a good choice.

Following the 3 Day Cardiac Diet provides restricted calories and nutrients for its intended duration and the weight loss benefits come with some risk to health as well as bodily stress. Also, the diet is not a long term solution and any weight loss reduction could well be offset by food binging that results when your eating program returns to normal. A better approach would be to follow a dieting plan that is more likely to bring true fat loss and provide a continuing, long term loss of weight, along with a slimmer, trimmer, more attractive body shape.

Lemon Detox Diet Recipe - Make it Today

The lemon detox diet recipe is by far the most requested of any of the detox type recipes available online. This is due to the high media coverage the detox diet drink has received on American and British television. I must say though that it does worry me that many who take up this diet do so without consulting their doctor or without any preparation. Before I give you the recipe I'm going to take a little of your time to make sure that your detox experience is as rewarding and safe as possible.

Firstly as I have already said before starting any detox diet plan consult your doctor. We are all unique and just because a detox diet works safely for one person does not mean it is ideal for everybody.

Diet

Secondly don’t simply switch from you normal high junk food, high processed food, high caffeine intake and alcohol diet straight to a harsh detox diet. If you do the chances are high that you will fail. Make sure at least a few days before you start a detox plan that to start cutting down on the foodstuffs you know you are going to grave.

High Protein Diet & Foods For Muscle Building

High protein diets have always been popular with athletes. Their popularity increased tenfold during the past 5 years with the introduction of the low carb type diets to the public that include high protein foods.

Regular people who do not exercise can eat moderately high protein foods. On the other hand athletes and people on muscle building diets must eat at least 1gram per lb of bodyweight in order to build muscle. A high protein diet is the staple of bodybuilders. Bodybuilding athletes always include a high protein food source in their daily diet.

\"protein Diet\"

High protein foods you can include in your diet are:

High Protein Diet & Foods For Muscle Building

Turkey breast

Chicken breast

Lean cuts of red meat

Lean cuts of pork

Fish (most fish is high in protein)

Eggs & Egg Whites

Skim Milk

Low fat cottage cheese

Protein powders & bars

Whether you are going for muscle building or fat loss, a high protein diet plan can certainly help you either way.

If you are trying to build muscle, you need a high protein intake in your daily diet in order to recover from workouts and build muscle tissue. Protein provides the building blocks for muscle and without it muscle building and growth simply will not occur. During weightlifting and hard training, muscle tissue is broken down. In order for that muscle tissue to be rebuilt and grow stronger, we need to eat a diet high in protein. It's pretty simple.

If fat loss is one's goal, a high protein diet is also an absolute must. Most high protein foods are very low in carbs and saturated fats. Therefore by eating high protein foods in your diet, you also also eating quality low calorie foods. In order to accelerate the fat loss process, reducing carbs and overall calories is usually recommended. High protein foods can help you in achieving that.

An average person who trains hard and weighs 180lbs requires a minimum of 180grams of protein in his diet per day. This means at least 1gram of protein per pound of bodyweight. Anything less and muscle building/recovery will not be optimal. Some hard training athletes consume up to 2 grams of protein per lb of bodyweight in order to accelerate the muscle building process. This is not recommended for most people who require a moderately high protein intake. The total amount of protein taken every day should be spread over 5 to 6 meals throughout the course of a day.

Timing of high protein foods is also very important. You should be consuming high protein foods at all times but more for your breakfast, post workout meal and before-bed meal. Start your high protein daily diet by giving your body good quality protein to start the day. Then, right after your workout, consume a protein shake that will help kick start the muscle repairing process. Last but not least you have your before bed meal where you must consume a slow digesting form of protein (casein mostly) that will give you a steady release of high quality amino acids throughout the night.

Eating high amounts of protein in your diet can be very demanding. It requires a lot of time to cook high protein foods like chicken and turkey. The best way to get all of your protein is to use protein powders. Protein powders are extremely high in protein and they are very convenient to use. Just one small scoop of protein can provide 20-24 grams of the highest quality protein available. Make sure you choose your high protein supplements wisely. Do not get caught up in the marketing frenzy of magazines. A tub of high quality protein should not cost you more than at any given time.

If you decide to embark upon a high protein diet, make sure you include a lot of vegetables and fibrous carbs with your meals in order to help protein digestion. Try to eat at least two salads per day and/or steamed vegetables. Furthermore, try to stay consistent with your high protein diet, day in day out, in order to keep a steady influx of aminos to your muscles. Always remember that if you are not eating enough protein & calories in your diet, your body will use existing muscle tissue to repair itself.

Gastric Bypass Patients Succeed Eating High Protein Diet

The first rule for successful weight loss and weight maintenance after Weight Loss Surgery (WLS) is Protein First - that means eating protein for three daily meals, and protein must be 50 percent of food intake. Some bariatric centers advise as much as 70 grams of protein a day. The gastric bypass diet should be high-protein, low-carbohydrate and low-volume. This is what successful WLS patients will eat for the rest of their life if they wish to maintain weight loss after surgery.

Animal products are the most nutrient rich source of protein and include fish, poultry and meat. Dairy protein, including eggs, is another excellent source of protein. Nuts and legumes are also good sources of protein, but sometimes difficult for the bariatric patient to consume. Tofu is another remarkable good source of vegetable protein and there are many quality flavorful products on the market for making it easy to incorporate into the diet.

\"protein Diet\"

Science is proving that a protein rich diet will prompt weight loss and increase energy. The body contains over fifty-thousand different active proteins all made out of the same building blocks: amino acids. Amino acids are made of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen as well as sulfur, phosphorus and iron. Many diseases - including obesity - indicate an amino acid deficiency.

Gastric Bypass Patients Succeed Eating High Protein Diet

WLS patients do not have the luxury of eating high-carbohydrate foods. They must eat lean protein or they will get sick, anemic, and weary. Weight loss will cease if patients eat processed carbohydrates instead of lean protein. Dumping or vomiting may also result if patients do not eat lean protein for the first half of every meal.

The distinction must be made between high fat proteins and lean proteins. A gastric bypass patient cannot tolerate high fat proteins such as bacon, fatty beef or sausage products or greasy fried chicken: these foods cause nausea and vomiting. In fact, many WLS patients report even smelling high fat foods, such a fried chicken, makes them nauseous. In addition, these high fat protein rich items are contributors to obesity, clogged arteries and heart disease. High fat foods should be avoided by anyone wishing to control their weight.

The Ideal Diet for Hypothyroidism

If you have hypothyroidism is very important to know that the type of diet you follow can help you reduce your symptoms, and at the same time help you control your weight. Weight gain goes hand in hand with hypothyroidism and to some people it gets rather difficult to lose weight with this condition.

There are key nutrients and foods that a diet for hypothyroid should include. On the other hand, there are certain foods that should be avoided.

Diet

What Your Diet Should Have

The Ideal Diet for Hypothyroidism

A healthy diet for someone with hypothyroidism would include whole grains, natural foods, plenty of fruits and vegetables and a good supply of seafood and other lean protein. You should cut back on fatty meats. A multivitamin is probably a good idea if you don't already take one.

An Important Mineral

Selenium may be the most important nutrient in a diet for hypothyroid.

Why?

This trace mineral is an antioxidant and is essential for converting the thyroid hormone your body produces, T4, into its active form, T3. Brazil nuts are an incredibly good source of selenium, but you can also get it from some lean meats.

Fiber is Key to Control Your Weight

Another tactic that will be very helpful for you if you're trying to lose weight is eating more fiber. Fiber makes you feel full and can help you lose weight, in addition to being helpful for constipation, another side effect of hypothyroidism.

You can ingest your fiber in pill form or through one of those over-the-counter fiber concoctions, but it is so much better if you get your fiber from actual foods, like beans, rice and other grains, whole wheat and oatmeal.

Strive for whole grains, also known as complex carbohydrates, over refined grains (things made with white flour or sugar). They're better for you, help maintain your blood sugar stable and will make you feel fuller.

Alcohol should also be avoided because it can cause blood sugar fluctuations.

A Diet With More Meals

Ideally, a diet for low thyroid function will include small meals spread out through the day rather than three big meals. If you eat five or six small meals it will help balance the slow metabolism that is part of hypothyroidism. Just remember, keep these meals around 300 calories each, and include exercise if you want to lose weight, too.

Some doctors recommend the Zone diet to those with hypothyroid. The why behind the system is somewhat complicated, but it has to do with balancing out your insulin reaction to food, limiting the spikes and crashes you probably feel right now. Carbs are a big part of this diet, particularly those refined grains we were just talking about.

The diet calls for drinking lots of water (a good idea for anyone), eating more fruit and vegetables and less pasta, bread and starches, and a small amount of lean protein through the day. Most of your carbs should come from fruit and vegetables, with other starches used sparingly. You also should not go more than five hours between meals.

Red Light Foods

As we were saying before, your diet should not include certain foods. Some vegetables, fruits and grains can depress the function of your thyroid gland. To learn about these foods visit diet for hypothyroid.

Cat Dandruff - 4 Steps to Get Rid of Cat Dandruff For Good

If your cat has a lot of loose dead skin cell flakes caught in his fur, you may be dealing with cat dandruff. Its not unusual for dogs and cats to experience a bit of dry skin during their lifetime, but its important to identify the underlying cause of the problem. Common causes include allergies, diabetes, poor diet, fur mites, and even sun burn. Here's some tips on identifying the root cause of cat dandruff and how to deal with the problem for good.

Dandruff is loose dead skin cells from the outer layer of your cat's skin usually visible in his fur. He may even scratch himself bloody resulting in missing patches of fur. The most common causes of cat dandruff are:

\"protein Diet\"

  • Feline diabetes;
  • Fungal infection;
  • Environmental allergy;
  • Food allergy;
  • Poor diet;
  • Parasites including fleas, mites and especially the Cheyletiella mite;
  • Low humidity environments;
  • Sunburn

Cat Dandruff - 4 Steps to Get Rid of Cat Dandruff For Good

Four steps to get rid of cat dandruff for good:

Step 1: Take a trip to the vet to rule out a serious medical conditions. You are going to need your vet to help you diagnose feline diabetes, a skin fungus or to pinpoint a food or airborne allergy.

Step 2: Get your cat on a proper high meat protein diet. You may think your cat is eating high quality cat food, however, commercial pet food companies are good at advertising poor quality cat food as a high-end product. Commercial cat food is packed with vegetable proteins, not meat proteins. Vegetable proteins don't help you cat one bit. Read the ingredients. If corn or soy grains are listed first on the list of ingredients you are feeding you cat vegetable proteins. You want a cat food product, preferably canned, that contains a meat protein as the first ingredient.

Step 3: Remove complications caused by a dry climate and sunburns. In a dry climate, your cat's skin (your skin too) benefits by adding a humidifier to your home space. If you have a fair skinned cat, typically white fur feline, give her plenty of places to get in the shade when she is outside.

Step 4: Now for the parasites. If you ever hear someone talking about 'walking dandruff' they are talking about the Chyletiella mite. These cat parasites are large enough to see with the naked eye. They are often the cause of skin problems and cat dandruff.

You can treat skin parasites fairly easily, but you are going to have to treat all the animals in your household, the carpeting, the bedding and maybe even your family members. Use hot water and Oxyfresh or your favorite detergent to wash cat bedding, sheets, blankets and anything that you cat likes to lie on. Get out the vacuum and go over the carpet 2 or 3 times a week.

Finally, get rid of the Cheyletiella mite once and for all using a flea and mite prevention program like Revolution, Frontline or Advantage. You will need a vet's prescription for these products but they are highly effective at controlling fleas and mites.

You can help your cat's skin heal naturally using a homeopathic remedy such as Equisetum arvense and Taraxacum officinalis. The herbs are known for their ability to soothe your cat's skin sores and keep his skin hydrated. Fucus vesiculosis is a sea vegetable used in natural remedies to support the thyroid. The thyroid is key to producing hormones that are necessary for maintaining skin and coat. You can even add a tablespoon of olive oil to your cat's food once or twice a week to stimulate natural oil production.

So there you have it, how to get rid of cat dandruff for good by ruling out serious medical conditions like feline diabetes, making sure your cat is eating a high meat protein diet, adding moisture to your home environment with a humidifier and eliminating fleas, mites and especially the Cheyletiella mite. Your vet will need to help you to diagnose physical problems and to provide a prescription for flea products like Revolution. However, you can include natural cat skin care products to help your cat heal and provide long term relief from cat dandruff and other feline skin problems - no prescription required.

Thinking of Home Cooking for Your Dog?

With the recent recall of many brands of pet food, pet owners are thinking twice about feeding their pets commercial pet foods.

Not only do we have to worry about what we are feeding our families; we now have the added worry about our cat or dog's diet.

\"protein Diet\"

What is a pet owner to do?

Thinking of Home Cooking for Your Dog?

The first thing you don't do is "jump right in and start cooking."

Why. You ask?

Simply because there are many things to take into consideration. Feeding your pet means providing the proper nutrition in order to keep him/her healthy and fit.

The first suggestion is read a book or two on a proper diet for your pet be it cat or dog. I have listed a few titles at the end of this article that I feel will be beneficial to read.

Secondly, you need to find more than one recipe to feed your pet as variety is not only the spice of life, but necessary in order to get the right combination of nutrients into the pet's body.

Thirdly, you have to decide if you have the time and energy to devote to the task of cooking for one or two more members of your family.

What are the benefits?

The benefits are many, it has been proven that a homemade diet has helped many dogs with various conditions regain their health. Many pet foods are of poor quality, over processed, filled with artificial ingredients and many other chemicals, just read the labels.

Carbohydrates are often more than 50 percent of the main ingredient in most pet foods. For dogs, carbohydrates are harder to digest and can cause inflammation to the body. For cats, carbohydrates are not an essential ingredient for their diets, proteins are.

Thus a home cooked diet can provide less carbohydrates and more protein making the food easier to digest and keeps the body's immune system from becoming over reactive.

Feeding your pet, fresh or lightly cooked foods helps to supply nutrients in their natural form, which over processed pet foods does not.

There are several types of homemade diets, which include, raw and cooked foods, diets that contain little or no grains; diets mixed with commercial food, and diets that either include raw or cooked bones. There are many choices and variety is the important ingredient.

Dogs are known to eat most anything, whether it is good for them or not.

There is no "one" diet that is good for all dogs or cats.

Every pet is an individual and the diet is dependent on physical condition, size, activity level and age. What is perfect for one pet may not be good for another.

That is why variety is stressed so much. Constant feeding of one recipe may not supply all the necessary nutrients, but changing food groups and content can easily fulfill your entire pet's needs.

It is not known exactly what nutrients are needed in a dog's diet; the USDA Nutrient Database uses figures to determine only average nutritional values. Nutritional studies are going on all the time and there are still gaps in their determinations of proper nutritional values.

Even if you were to follow a diet determined by your vet or a pet nutritionist they would advise adding a vitamin/mineral supplement, as no one really knows exactly what your particular pet needs.

A homemade diet should provide the following: variety, balance over time, and calcium.

The variety can come from feeding such foods as chicken, turkey, beef, fish, eggs, cottage cheese, and some pork. Some vegetables, fruit (no grapes or raisins) and some grains can be added. Organ meats such as liver, kidneys or heart should be added at different times.

Raw meaty bones are very good for teeth and gums and provide calcium. When considering bones do not feed cooked chicken bones. Raw chicken backs and leg quarters are considered acceptable, those bones will not splinter, along with lamb necks and breast and pork riblets and necks.

Chicken necks and turkey necks are considered okay also, but large dogs tend to choke on the turkey necks and little dogs on the chicken necks, so I would be very careful offering those items unless you were close by.

You can cook bones and grind them, if feeding raw bones makes you feel uncomfortable. Large meaty beef bones are good too,

If bacteria from raw foods scare you, don't be, a dog's insides were meant to handle bacteria. Unless your dog is stressed or ill, bacteria from raw meat or chicken will have little if any effect on your dog. The same goes for raw eggs, though you can lightly scramble or soft boil them if it makes you feel better.

There is no danger in feeding your puppy or older dog a high protein diet, as protein is beneficial to the immune system, the central nervous system and helps the your dog have healthy skin and coat. Dogs that are fed a high protein diet seem calmer and less hyper than those fed a high carbohydrate diet.

If you do not have the time or desire to prepare completely homemade meals for your dog there is no problem in adding fresh food to your dog's dry or canned food. However, the percentage of fresh versus commercial should be kept down to about 25 percent in order not to upset the nutritional balance.

When adding food to your pet's commercial diet try to stay with more protein than carbohydrates as the commercial food is already high in grains, Best bets are eggs, meat, fish (canned with bones like salmon, sardines or mackerel), yogurt, cottage cheese and small amounts of vegetables.

There are companies that sell a pre-mixed dry food that
is ready for you to add fresh food to complete a balanced meal for your dog. Some companies such as http://www.thehonestkitchen.com and http://www.solidgoldhealth.com offer great products you can add to your pet's food or feed directly.

Should you decide in the light of the current pet food situation to start home cooking for your pet, please do yourself a favor and your pet, read and learn before you make the attempt.

If you do not feed your pet the correct amount of nutrients it needs for survival you are only not only defeating your purpose for doing it, but you are affecting your pet's health and your pocketbook with extra vet bills.

Thinking of Home Cooking for Your Dog?

Keeping our pets healthy is very beneficial not only to the pet, but to our pocketbooks. If the only time you need to visit the veterinarian is for yearly check ups and necessary shots you are saving money. Nutrition is very important in keeping a dog healthy, proper quality food that contains all the necessary vitamins and minerals is a good way to start. Low Carb Diet Side Effects

Many people curious about starting a low carb diet wonder if there are side effects they need to be aware of before getting started. Many also wonder if there are harmful low carb diet side effects too, so let's look at the most common side effects of low carb dieting, and talk about whether any of these are harmful.

Some of these low carb diet side effects can be problematic for people with health conditions, particularly if they're taking medications for those conditions. Often the side effects are good, but you need to be aware they can happen and talk to your medical care provider because they'll need to monitor your progress and possibly change, reduce, or eliminate medications as you progress.

Diet

For instance, a very common low carb diet side effect is lowered, or more even blood sugar levels. This is an important low carb diet side effect for any diabetic, particularly ones that take insulin shots or medication. Since low carb diets can drastically reduce your blood sugar levels naturally, your doctor may need to adjust your medication levels to compensate for those changes.

Low Carb Diet Side Effects

Another low carb diet side effect is of course losing a lot of weight. This by itself is not technically a side effect, but related effects of losing weight can include regulation of blood pressure, easing or disappearance of digestive tract problems, and resolution of breathing problems too.

If you're taking high blood pressure medication, then the side effect of having that lowered from eating a low carb diet will need to be addressed by your doctor or medical care specialist. The same applies for digestive troubles, if you experience resolution to those problems as a low carb dieting side effect, your doctor will need to adjust or eliminate the medications you take.

Now if you don't take medications for conditions such as those listed above, you may still experience low carb diet side effects, but they're likely to be ones you're happy to have.

Common, "good" low carb diet side effects include reduced cravings for sugars and starches; increased energy; reduced bloated and gassy, upset stomach feelings; improved bowel movements; regulated blood sugar levels and blood pressure levels; loss of excess water retention; and of course, loss of excess body fat.

There are some low carb diet side effects that are not harmful, but you need to be aware of them because they are uncomfortable at best. These low carb diet side effects are more common during the first one to five days on the diet, and are side effects of your body adjusting to your eating changes. These side effects can include headaches; nausea; dizziness; lethargy or low energy; severe sugar cravings; irritability; and constipation.

There are also a couple of women specific low carb diet side effects. In the first week or two of your new low carb diet, you may experience oddities with your monthly menstrual flow. Usually this side effect lasts a short time though, and is caused by your body adjusting to the new eating lifestyle you've chosen. A great low carb diet side effect comes later: Women's menstrual flow is usually reduced, and there is generally much less pain or other problems involved while you're on a low carb diet.

Many of those early low carb diet side effects can be reduced by drinking extra water and getting plenty of rest, plus making sure you don't go hungry. In rare cases these initial low carb diet side effects can last as long as ten days, but usually they're present from approximately the third to the fifth day of your low carb diet.

High Protein Diet for Weight Loss

Kevin Pederson, a regular writer for Nutrition, Diet and Health helps us maintain healthy eating habits. High protein diet is a popular weight loss diet and why many opt for all protein diet.

High Protein Diets to Lose Weight

The craze for high protein diets began back in the 1970's with the advent of the Atkins Diet. The majority of these programs are designed to be used by both men and women. While losing weight is a secondary goal of a high protein diet, its first priority is to build lean muscle mass. There are no diet supplements or appetite suppressants that a person is required to purchase with the diet, but most of these diets do encourage the consumption of protein bars and shakes. In an unsurprising fashion, the primary feature of a high diet in protein is the consumption of large amounts of protein.

A high protein often incorporates the consumption of numerous high protein foods, including fish, chicken, egg whites, and salmon. The aforementioned protein bars and shakes are also included in this list. Whey protein and soy protein supplements are often featured in modern day high protein diets. High diet in protein are commonly used by individuals who work out regularly, as protein is an essential nutrient for the building and repairing of lean muscle mass. Another feature of the standard diet involves consuming foods that have a minimal amount of carbohydrates.

\"protein Diet\"

There are numerous advantages to be enjoyed by those who consume a high protein diet. First and foremost, protein is necessary for the building of muscle. Secondly, in modern medicine, the consumption of lean protein is generally encouraged as a healthy lifestyle choice. Next, the scientific evidence that backs up the benefits of a diet that's high in protein was first found in the 1970's. Since modern medicine has not revised its opinion of the healthiness of the diet, many dieters will find such information comforting. However, an individual must guard against the consumption of too much meat, which can actually have negative health benefits in certain situations.

High Protein Diets to Lose Weight

A high diet in protein may not be the best dietary choice for vegans and vegetarians, whose lifestyles discourage the consumption of animal meat. The decision to not eat meat can actually make following a high protein diet rather difficult. One aspect of the diet is that it does discourage the consumption of carbohydrates, which the human body actually requires in certain amounts to use for daily energy. Finding the right balance between these two scenarios can be difficult for some dieters. Before an individual makes the decision to begin following a high protein diet, he or she should first consult their primary care physician. To learn more, check out how to lose weight.

There are many opinions in regards to diet and its effects on Thrombocytopenia. There are some very crazy dietary recommendations given online that really do not have any scientific basis. Some of these diets are recommended by those who are supposed to know something about nutrition but really do not have any idea of what to recommend a person with low platelets. As you read this article you will find out the truth about which diet really increases your platelets.

Diet Rich in Protein

\"protein Diet\"

It may seem logical to choose a diet that is high in protein. Why? Because since every building block in the body is formed with protein one may conclude that adding more protein may be beneficial and result in more platelets. But the truth of the matter is, even though it seems logical it does not really work.

Low Platelets - Is a High Protein Diet Better Than a Low Calorie Diet For Low Platelet Count?

The American way of eating is already full of high amounts of protein. Increasing the protein intake is just going to worsen the situation. Too much protein can alter the immune system and cause more inflammation that can result in more platelet destruction. Especially if this protein derived from animals. Dairy protein is also very offensive to many who have Thrombocytopenia.

I understand the need of protein. But the body only needs from 30 to 60 grams a day of protein. Anything higher than this will hurt the body.

A Diet Low in Calories

Many studies have shown the effects that a high macronutrient diet can have on experimental rats that suffer from low platelets

In one study, two groups of rats that suffered from low platelets were chosen. Each group was given a specific diet. One group had a diet low in calories while the other group was permitted to eat abundantly.

Scientist were surprised at the results of this study because the group of mice that were overfed got worse with the high caloric and protein diet while the rats that received the low calorie diet had a dramatic increase in their platelet level.

Because of this, it is really better to reduce the amount of protein and rich foods from the diet and reduce calorie intake. You can improve you low platelet count by following a low calorie diet that has only moderate amounts of protein. You can dramatically boost your low platelets this way.

Always consult a qualified health care practitioner knowledgeable in nutrition before changing your diet if you have a low blood platelet count.

Ayurvedic Treatment For Gout

Gout is known as "aadya-Vaat" as per Ayurveda. It is a disease of the affluent and rich people. There are many simple home remedies for gout which can help to ease the pain like applying ice on the inflamed toe or joint, eating cherries, avoiding pulses, cereals or high protein diet, but one of the most important thing is cleansing the blood and correcting the disturbed purine - pyrimidine metabolism. The proteins which are processed in the liver are not correctly processed thereby leaving the intermediate metabolites causing increase in uric acid levels. This increased uric acid crystalizes around various joints especially the toe joint and causes pain and inflammation.

The Ayurvedic treatment of Gout consists of eating an alkaline diet rather than acidic diet.

\"protein Diet\"

1. Cherries, Strawberries, fresh fruits and vegetables are good in uric acid and gout patients. They are alkaline in nature and help to decrease uric acid.

2. Various Ayurvedic remedies like suranjan, guggul ( Commiphora mukul), Berberis aristata, Manjistha- Rubia cordifolia, Giloy (Tinospora cordifolia), Neem, Haritaki, Bhibhitaki, Amalaki ( Trifla), vacha are all useful in purfiying the blood and helping in gout. Most of these Ayurvedic herbs are explained by ancient ayurveda scholar Chakradutt in his text in the name of Navkarhik powder.

3. Chakradutt - an ancient Ayurveda scholar described Navkarshik powder which was a mixture of 9 herbs as excellent ayurvedic treatment for gout. This herbal combination not only clears the uric acid and gout but also helps in cleaning the blood.

4. Kishore guggul - This is a traditional Ayurvedic treatment for Gout. Kaishore Guggul is particularly helpful for the accumulation of pitta (Uric Acid) in the joints and muscles, which may be indicated by pain and inflammation. Chronic accumulation can lead to serious conditions such as bursitis, tendonitis and Gouty arthritis. It also helps in many skin conditions and cleanses the blood.

5. Bathing the feet in Epsom salt is also a good home remedy for gout.

6. Drink water in abundance 8-10 glasses per day will flush way toxins and dilute the uric acid levels.

7. Punarnava Mandur - This is another ancient remedies described as Ayurvedic treatment for Gout. This helps in reducing the swelling and inflammation.

1. Type O - The majority of the world's population have blood type O. According to this system, people with Type O should maintain a low carbohydrate, low dairy product, but high protein diet. This means that Type O people can eat as much meat and fish as they want because that is what their body needs, but must eat limited breads, pastas, and other carbohydrate foods and dairy products such as butter, cheese, egg, among others if they want to lose weight and remain healthy. With proper eating and daily exercise, they are one-step away from a more beautiful and healthier life.

2. Type A - Those with Type A must eat lots of fish and vegetables, but limited red meat and dairy products. They should also exercise at least twice a week.

3. Type B - To lose weight and become healthy, they should eat many vegetables, fruits, meats, and dairy products, but refrain from eating chicken and bacon.

4. Type AB - Combining eating patterns of Types A and B is the only way to become healthy for them.

Protein Principles for Diabetes

Dietary considerations can present a Hobson's choice in diabetes. Even when the intake is nutritious, assimilating it can be another matter. Then there is the problem of progression of diabetic complications if one ends up with excess glucose or fat in the system. Excess carbohydrates in a meal, and the resulting uncontrolled blood sugar levels can be detrimental to any number of tissues, from the lens of the eye, to the neurons, small blood vessels and the kidneys. Fat is also a problem with increase incidences of atherosclerosis, large vessel disease and cardiac complications. What, then is the appropriate macronutrient for the diabetic population? Enough medical literature exists to suggest that in diabetes, proteins are probably the best bet.

Proteins are the natural choice of the body when faced with diabetes. In uncontrolled diabetes, muscle protein is broken down into amino acids to be converted into glucose by the liver. If left to fend for itself, this can create a commotion within the body. Since proteins have to supply enough energy to substitute for carbohydrates, proteins are broken down faster than they are made. The body ends up with a protein deficit, a situation with subtle, yet far-reaching effects on normal body functions. Importantly, for diabetics, a protein deficit has been shown to impair resistance to infections (Ganong WF). Replenishing the depleting protein stores is a vital requirement of all diabetic diets.

\"protein Diet\"

Importance of proteins in a diabetic has been well documented. The American Associations of Clinical Endocrinologists have made it clear that not much evidence exists to indicate that the patients with diabetes need to reduce their intake of dietary proteins. The AACE recommends that 10-20% of the calorie intake in diabetes should come from proteins (AACE Diabetes Guidelines). It is in fact believed that this is one nutrient that does not increase blood glucose levels in both diabetics and healthy subjects (Gannon et al).

Protein Principles for Diabetes

Nutrition therapy for diabetes has progressed from prevention of obesity or weight gain to improving insulin's effectiveness and contributing to improved metabolic control (Franz MJ). In this new role, a high protein diet (30% of total food energy) forms a very pertinent part of nutrition therapy. One of the most important causes for type II diabetes is obesity. Excess body fat raises insulin resistance and higher levels of insulin are required to bring down blood sugars as the weight increases (Ganong WF). Another problem with excess fat is the clogging of arteries with atherosclerotic plaques that is responsible for a wide range of diabetic complications. Any mechanism that reduces body fat decreases insulin resistance and improves blood glucose control. Parker et al have also shown that a high protein diet decreased abdominal and total fat mass in women with type II diabetes. Other studies by Gannon et al. and Nuttall et al have verified that blood glucose levels and glycosylated hemoglobin (a marker of long term diabetic control) reduce after 5 weeks on a diet containing 30% of the total food energy in the form of proteins and low carbohydrate content. It is speculated that a high protein diet has a favorable effect in diabetes due to the ability of proteins and amino acids to stimulate insulin release from the pancreas. Thus, a high protein diet is not only safe in diabetes, but can also be therapeutic, resulting in improved glycemic control, and decreased risk of complications related to diabetes.

The benefits of a high protein diet do not end here. Individual protein components of such a diet, when aptly chosen, can have other advantages as well. Dietary supplements containing proteins like whey and casein come highly recommended. Casein is a milk protein and has the ability to form a gel or clot in the stomach. The ability to form this clot makes it very efficient in nutrient supply. The clot is able to provide a sustained, slow release of amino acids into the blood stream, sometimes lasting for several hours (Boirie et al. 1997). A slow sustained release of nutrients matches well with the limited amount of insulin that can be produced by the pancreas in diabetes. A protein supplement containing casein can thus increase the amount of energy assimilated from every meal and, at the same time, reduce the need for pharmacological interventions to control blood sugar.

Whey proteins and caseins also contain "casokinins" and "lactokinins', (FitzGerald) which have been found to decrease both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in hypertensive humans (Seppo). In addition, whey protein forms bioactive amine in the gut that promotes immunity. Whey protein contains an ample supply of the amino acid cysteine. Cysteine appears to enhance glutathione levels, which has been shown to have strong antioxidant properties -- antioxidants mop up free radicals that induce cell death and play a role in aging.

Thus, development of a protein supplement containing casein and whey can provide an apt high protein diet and its health benefits to individuals suffering from diabetes, obesity and hypercholesterolemia.
