Thinking of Home Cooking for Your Dog?

With the recent recall of many brands of pet food, pet owners are thinking twice about feeding their pets commercial pet foods.

Not only do we have to worry about what we are feeding our families; we now have the added worry about our cat or dog's diet.

\"protein Diet\"

What is a pet owner to do?

Thinking of Home Cooking for Your Dog?

The first thing you don't do is "jump right in and start cooking."

Why. You ask?

Simply because there are many things to take into consideration. Feeding your pet means providing the proper nutrition in order to keep him/her healthy and fit.

The first suggestion is read a book or two on a proper diet for your pet be it cat or dog. I have listed a few titles at the end of this article that I feel will be beneficial to read.

Secondly, you need to find more than one recipe to feed your pet as variety is not only the spice of life, but necessary in order to get the right combination of nutrients into the pet's body.

Thirdly, you have to decide if you have the time and energy to devote to the task of cooking for one or two more members of your family.

What are the benefits?

The benefits are many, it has been proven that a homemade diet has helped many dogs with various conditions regain their health. Many pet foods are of poor quality, over processed, filled with artificial ingredients and many other chemicals, just read the labels.

Carbohydrates are often more than 50 percent of the main ingredient in most pet foods. For dogs, carbohydrates are harder to digest and can cause inflammation to the body. For cats, carbohydrates are not an essential ingredient for their diets, proteins are.

Thus a home cooked diet can provide less carbohydrates and more protein making the food easier to digest and keeps the body's immune system from becoming over reactive.

Feeding your pet, fresh or lightly cooked foods helps to supply nutrients in their natural form, which over processed pet foods does not.

There are several types of homemade diets, which include, raw and cooked foods, diets that contain little or no grains; diets mixed with commercial food, and diets that either include raw or cooked bones. There are many choices and variety is the important ingredient.

Dogs are known to eat most anything, whether it is good for them or not.

There is no "one" diet that is good for all dogs or cats.

Every pet is an individual and the diet is dependent on physical condition, size, activity level and age. What is perfect for one pet may not be good for another.

That is why variety is stressed so much. Constant feeding of one recipe may not supply all the necessary nutrients, but changing food groups and content can easily fulfill your entire pet's needs.

It is not known exactly what nutrients are needed in a dog's diet; the USDA Nutrient Database uses figures to determine only average nutritional values. Nutritional studies are going on all the time and there are still gaps in their determinations of proper nutritional values.

Even if you were to follow a diet determined by your vet or a pet nutritionist they would advise adding a vitamin/mineral supplement, as no one really knows exactly what your particular pet needs.

A homemade diet should provide the following: variety, balance over time, and calcium.

The variety can come from feeding such foods as chicken, turkey, beef, fish, eggs, cottage cheese, and some pork. Some vegetables, fruit (no grapes or raisins) and some grains can be added. Organ meats such as liver, kidneys or heart should be added at different times.

Raw meaty bones are very good for teeth and gums and provide calcium. When considering bones do not feed cooked chicken bones. Raw chicken backs and leg quarters are considered acceptable, those bones will not splinter, along with lamb necks and breast and pork riblets and necks.

Chicken necks and turkey necks are considered okay also, but large dogs tend to choke on the turkey necks and little dogs on the chicken necks, so I would be very careful offering those items unless you were close by.

You can cook bones and grind them, if feeding raw bones makes you feel uncomfortable. Large meaty beef bones are good too,

If bacteria from raw foods scare you, don't be, a dog's insides were meant to handle bacteria. Unless your dog is stressed or ill, bacteria from raw meat or chicken will have little if any effect on your dog. The same goes for raw eggs, though you can lightly scramble or soft boil them if it makes you feel better.

There is no danger in feeding your puppy or older dog a high protein diet, as protein is beneficial to the immune system, the central nervous system and helps the your dog have healthy skin and coat. Dogs that are fed a high protein diet seem calmer and less hyper than those fed a high carbohydrate diet.

If you do not have the time or desire to prepare completely homemade meals for your dog there is no problem in adding fresh food to your dog's dry or canned food. However, the percentage of fresh versus commercial should be kept down to about 25 percent in order not to upset the nutritional balance.

When adding food to your pet's commercial diet try to stay with more protein than carbohydrates as the commercial food is already high in grains, Best bets are eggs, meat, fish (canned with bones like salmon, sardines or mackerel), yogurt, cottage cheese and small amounts of vegetables.

There are companies that sell a pre-mixed dry food that
is ready for you to add fresh food to complete a balanced meal for your dog. Some companies such as http://www.thehonestkitchen.com and http://www.solidgoldhealth.com offer great products you can add to your pet's food or feed directly.

Should you decide in the light of the current pet food situation to start home cooking for your pet, please do yourself a favor and your pet, read and learn before you make the attempt.

If you do not feed your pet the correct amount of nutrients it needs for survival you are only not only defeating your purpose for doing it, but you are affecting your pet's health and your pocketbook with extra vet bills.

Thinking of Home Cooking for Your Dog?

Keeping our pets healthy is very beneficial not only to the pet, but to our pocketbooks. If the only time you need to visit the veterinarian is for yearly check ups and necessary shots you are saving money. Nutrition is very important in keeping a dog healthy, proper quality food that contains all the necessary vitamins and minerals is a good way to start. Low Carb Diet Side Effects

Many people curious about starting a low carb diet wonder if there are side effects they need to be aware of before getting started. Many also wonder if there are harmful low carb diet side effects too, so let's look at the most common side effects of low carb dieting, and talk about whether any of these are harmful.

Some of these low carb diet side effects can be problematic for people with health conditions, particularly if they're taking medications for those conditions. Often the side effects are good, but you need to be aware they can happen and talk to your medical care provider because they'll need to monitor your progress and possibly change, reduce, or eliminate medications as you progress.

Diet

For instance, a very common low carb diet side effect is lowered, or more even blood sugar levels. This is an important low carb diet side effect for any diabetic, particularly ones that take insulin shots or medication. Since low carb diets can drastically reduce your blood sugar levels naturally, your doctor may need to adjust your medication levels to compensate for those changes.

Low Carb Diet Side Effects

Another low carb diet side effect is of course losing a lot of weight. This by itself is not technically a side effect, but related effects of losing weight can include regulation of blood pressure, easing or disappearance of digestive tract problems, and resolution of breathing problems too.

If you're taking high blood pressure medication, then the side effect of having that lowered from eating a low carb diet will need to be addressed by your doctor or medical care specialist. The same applies for digestive troubles, if you experience resolution to those problems as a low carb dieting side effect, your doctor will need to adjust or eliminate the medications you take.

Now if you don't take medications for conditions such as those listed above, you may still experience low carb diet side effects, but they're likely to be ones you're happy to have.

Common, "good" low carb diet side effects include reduced cravings for sugars and starches; increased energy; reduced bloated and gassy, upset stomach feelings; improved bowel movements; regulated blood sugar levels and blood pressure levels; loss of excess water retention; and of course, loss of excess body fat.

There are some low carb diet side effects that are not harmful, but you need to be aware of them because they are uncomfortable at best. These low carb diet side effects are more common during the first one to five days on the diet, and are side effects of your body adjusting to your eating changes. These side effects can include headaches; nausea; dizziness; lethargy or low energy; severe sugar cravings; irritability; and constipation.

There are also a couple of women specific low carb diet side effects. In the first week or two of your new low carb diet, you may experience oddities with your monthly menstrual flow. Usually this side effect lasts a short time though, and is caused by your body adjusting to the new eating lifestyle you've chosen. A great low carb diet side effect comes later: Women's menstrual flow is usually reduced, and there is generally much less pain or other problems involved while you're on a low carb diet.

Many of those early low carb diet side effects can be reduced by drinking extra water and getting plenty of rest, plus making sure you don't go hungry. In rare cases these initial low carb diet side effects can last as long as ten days, but usually they're present from approximately the third to the fifth day of your low carb diet.

High Protein Diet for Weight Loss

Kevin Pederson, a regular writer for Nutrition, Diet and Health helps us maintain healthy eating habits. High protein diet is a popular weight loss diet and why many opt for all protein diet.

High Protein Diets to Lose Weight

The craze for high protein diets began back in the 1970's with the advent of the Atkins Diet. The majority of these programs are designed to be used by both men and women. While losing weight is a secondary goal of a high protein diet, its first priority is to build lean muscle mass. There are no diet supplements or appetite suppressants that a person is required to purchase with the diet, but most of these diets do encourage the consumption of protein bars and shakes. In an unsurprising fashion, the primary feature of a high diet in protein is the consumption of large amounts of protein.

A high protein often incorporates the consumption of numerous high protein foods, including fish, chicken, egg whites, and salmon. The aforementioned protein bars and shakes are also included in this list. Whey protein and soy protein supplements are often featured in modern day high protein diets. High diet in protein are commonly used by individuals who work out regularly, as protein is an essential nutrient for the building and repairing of lean muscle mass. Another feature of the standard diet involves consuming foods that have a minimal amount of carbohydrates.

\"protein Diet\"

There are numerous advantages to be enjoyed by those who consume a high protein diet. First and foremost, protein is necessary for the building of muscle. Secondly, in modern medicine, the consumption of lean protein is generally encouraged as a healthy lifestyle choice. Next, the scientific evidence that backs up the benefits of a diet that's high in protein was first found in the 1970's. Since modern medicine has not revised its opinion of the healthiness of the diet, many dieters will find such information comforting. However, an individual must guard against the consumption of too much meat, which can actually have negative health benefits in certain situations.

High Protein Diets to Lose Weight

A high diet in protein may not be the best dietary choice for vegans and vegetarians, whose lifestyles discourage the consumption of animal meat. The decision to not eat meat can actually make following a high protein diet rather difficult. One aspect of the diet is that it does discourage the consumption of carbohydrates, which the human body actually requires in certain amounts to use for daily energy. Finding the right balance between these two scenarios can be difficult for some dieters. Before an individual makes the decision to begin following a high protein diet, he or she should first consult their primary care physician. To learn more, check out how to lose weight.

Low Platelets - Is a High Protein Diet Better Than a Low Calorie Diet For Low Platelet Count?

There are many opinions in regards to diet and its effects on Thrombocytopenia. There are some very crazy dietary recommendations given online that really do not have any scientific basis. Some of these diets are recommended by those who are supposed to know something about nutrition but really do not have any idea of what to recommend a person with low platelets. As you read this article you will find out the truth about which diet really increases your platelets.

Diet Rich in Protein

\"protein Diet\"

It may seem logical to choose a diet that is high in protein. Why? Because since every building block in the body is formed with protein one may conclude that adding more protein may be beneficial and result in more platelets. But the truth of the matter is, even though it seems logical it does not really work.

Low Platelets - Is a High Protein Diet Better Than a Low Calorie Diet For Low Platelet Count?

The American way of eating is already full of high amounts of protein. Increasing the protein intake is just going to worsen the situation. Too much protein can alter the immune system and cause more inflammation that can result in more platelet destruction. Especially if this protein derived from animals. Dairy protein is also very offensive to many who have Thrombocytopenia.

I understand the need of protein. But the body only needs from 30 to 60 grams a day of protein. Anything higher than this will hurt the body.

A Diet Low in Calories

Many studies have shown the effects that a high macronutrient diet can have on experimental rats that suffer from low platelets

In one study, two groups of rats that suffered from low platelets were chosen. Each group was given a specific diet. One group had a diet low in calories while the other group was permitted to eat abundantly.

Scientist were surprised at the results of this study because the group of mice that were overfed got worse with the high caloric and protein diet while the rats that received the low calorie diet had a dramatic increase in their platelet level.

Because of this, it is really better to reduce the amount of protein and rich foods from the diet and reduce calorie intake. You can improve you low platelet count by following a low calorie diet that has only moderate amounts of protein. You can dramatically boost your low platelets this way.

Always consult a qualified health care practitioner knowledgeable in nutrition before changing your diet if you have a low blood platelet count.

There are many simple home remedies for gout which can help to ease the pain like applying ice on the inflamed toe or joint, eating cherries, avoiding pulses, cereals or high protein diet, but one of the most important thing is cleansing the blood and correcting the disturbed purine - pyrimidine metabolism. The proteins which are processed in the liver are not correctly processed thereby leaving the intermediate metabolites causing increase in uric acid levels. This increased uric acid crystalizes around various joints especially the toe joint and causes pain and inflammation.

The Ayurvedic treatment of Gout consists of eating an alkaline diet rather than acidic diet.
